Student Need Analysis

The initial and ongoing needs assessment is crucial to the success of the math or physics tutoring session. I customize each lesson to the individual student and I therefore need to fully understand what needs to be worked on the most. The needs are often closely related to the overall objective of the tutoring. That might be to raise a grade in a course or to prepare for a final exams. Each situation is different and so is each tutoring session.

During an initial need analysis session, I will ask many questions regarding previous, current, and expect performance in a class. I will look at the course book and also at the student's work and previous tests if available. I try to be as thorough as possible where preparing lesson plans. Need analysis is therefore a crucial part of the success of my math tutoring and physics tutoring. I take need analysis very seriously and typically require a need analysis session before I begin tutoring. It takes a little bit longer that way but the results are much more customized and effective.
